2010 Fund A Cure

The money raised through the 2010 Fund A Cure program benefited research on the Artificial Pancreas Project (APP). Building on JDRF’s history of cutting-edge diabetes research, through the APP, JDRF has connected academic and business partners to work aggressively toward the development and approval of this revolutionary technology, which will transform the lives of millions of people living with type 1 diabetes.

For people living with type 1 diabetes, maintaining tight control over blood glucose levels is one of the most difficult aspects of managing the disease. No matter how diligently glucose levels are monitored, small missteps can cause dangerous lows or highs, which are among the primary causes of complications, such as blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, nerve damage, and amputations.

An artificial pancreas system will utilize a computer program connecting a continuous glucose monitor with an insulin pump, allowing the two devices to communicate and work together. In much the same way a pacemaker regulates the heartbeat, the artificial pancreas will maintain continuous control over blood sugar levels. An artificial pancreas system will revolutionize the lives of people with type 1 diabetes, much like the pacemaker did for cardiac care.

The 2010 Fund A Cure program was held in memory of JDRF Illinois dear friend and champion, Ron Santo.

100% of your Fund A Cure donation will benefit research on the Artificial Pancreas Project.
